All about Healthy Nails

What you eat will reflect on the health of your nails, too.

Nail Facts and Myths

You’ll never believe this but when you gulp in some few gallons of water, besides cleaning up your system it also helps something you’d least expect it to… Your nails! The cells in your body get charged and moist with water entering your system, making you shine along with your nails.

Like drinking in milk helps you build that calcium within your system, it also does a good deal of benefit for your nails. Nails can also become stronger if you were to rub in rinds of lemon each day on the tips of your nails. Most women, (especially those who were equally interested in keeping up their beauty!) in the olden times who were used to washing utensils used lemon rinds to get rid of the grime that so easily settled under their nail. Regular cleaning in this manner, not only cleans your nails, it also give them this squeaky-clean shine, unmatched by any beauty product designed for your nails.

Most of the times, nails suffer and become brittle thanks to the lack of vitamin A and calcium causing them to get dry. Severe lack of protein, folic acid and vitamin C causes hang nails. These not only wear off easily, they can also bleed and cause pain. You might have noticed that some nails have these white bands on them. French Manicure aside, these bands were first considered to be a source of luck for some. In reality, white bands across the nails are caused by protein deficiency. It is the body’s method of crying for help and foe us to feed it with the necessary protein. Then there are other problems also related to nails. One of them involve the splitting of nails. A painful condition wherein nails hurt for almost no reason at all, this condition is caused due to the lack of sufficient hydrochloric acid in the body, the same hydrochloric acid that causes the hunger pangs in your body.

Causes and Concerns for Nails

Insufficient intake or vitamin B12 can lead to excessive dryness, very rounded and curved ends and darkening of nails. B12 can be sourced in a variety of foods and vegetables and if you’re not a veggie lover, then your best bet would be to take Vitamin B 12 supplements. Insufficient zinc can cause development of white spots on the nails. Men are most prone to the lack of zinc as thanks to their hand jobs a lot of semen that is rich in zinc gets lost from their bodies. Then there are other reasons for chapped nails that include huge cuts and cracks, an indication that there is a great need for more liquids to get into your body. The reason of fruits gaining importance from time to time is that they provide you with the necessary juices and fiber, both exceptionally important for your nails. Most nails are made up of protein, so your best bet could also be that you have some amount of Soy or soy related products in your diet. One of the common myths known to many is the fact that nail biting is a cause for brittle nails. In fact cutting or biting nails helps nails grow at a faster rate. What is important is that you get rid of the problem with immediate effect as this nail biting finish never really ends with age. It increases with time! The red skin around your cuticles can be caused by poor metabolism of essential fatty acids. Here are some of the guidelines for you to follow for improving the health of your nails:

* Eat a diet composed of 50% fruit and raw vegetables in order to supply necessary vitamins, minerals and enzymes.

* Eat foods rich in sulfur and silicon, such as broccoli, fish and onions. Include foods rich in biotin such as soy, brewer’s yeast and whole grains.
