Why Cinnamon Should Be a Staple in Your Shopping Cart!

We often don't think of herbs and spices as food but they are and many of them contain healthful antioxidants and phytochemicals just like fruits and vegetables do. One of my favorite spices is cinnamon. I use it on a variety of foods and I love that the smell of cinnamon is everywhere during the holiday season!

Herbs and spices grow from the earth just like the produce we eat does so that is why they contain many of the same health benefits. We obviously don't eat the same volume of spices as we do vegetables but we still take in disease fighting antioxidants and every little bit of those help us stay healthy!

Cinnamon is a spice with many potential health benefits. Research is ongoing but it appears that consuming cinnamon may help with everything from blood sugar control, to lowering cholesterol, improving cognitive function and memory, relieving upset stomach, preventing unwanted blood clotting and even inflammation. There is still more work to be done in this area but it's encouraging to incorporate cinnamon into your diet more often.

Cinnamon is easiest to use in oatmeal or baked goods but it can also be added to hot beverages like tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Many marinade recipes I have seen also incorporate it in there. You can sprinkle it in your yogurt or cereal and it also tastes great on roasted vegetables (like squash and sweet potatoes).

Next time you shop, restock your cinnamon and try to use it once a week. Also buy a cinnamon scented candle to make your house smell festive and serve as a reminder about the great health benefits of cinnamon!
